World Environment Day was established in 1972 by United Nations ‘encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.’
In 1974 the first time the slogan ‘Only One Earth’ was used and it seems a powerful reminder that we still ‘only have one earth’ with a bigger need for change now more than ever.
Since then they have led many campaigns. Last years’ topic centred around the use of single-use or disposable plastics, with the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
The topic itself remains high on everyone’s agendas as we push to reduce, reuse and recycle in efforts protect our land and seas from vast amounts of plastic waste. While bags and bottles have been the main focus for change, recent reports now look towards to the use of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds.
For 2019, the topic is Air Pollution, building awareness around what causes air pollution, with waste being a big factor. As ever we’re encouraged to make changes and take action with their #BeatAirPollution campaign.
We’ve noticed changes in buying and has been supported by recent research conducted by the BPMA. It reports that 58% of respondents feel that the news about the environmental impact of plastics has influenced future decisions on purchasing plastic promotional products, with many looking for recyclable, eco, environmentally friendly and biodegradable alternatives.
Thankfully our industry is responding to this and we’re able to offer a variety of innovative products.
